The advantages of the pot magnet principle and holding force

A loose Neodymium magnet loses magnetic field lines from its back and sides. In a pot magnet, the core is encased in a steel cup. This housing redirects the magnetic field and concentrates the entire attractive force onto the exposed surface. This results in an extremely high holding force upon direct contact.

The stated holding force is a guaranteed value, provided the magnet connects directly and fully across the entire surface of a ferromagnetic counterpart that is smooth and thick enough. If the counter-plate is too thin, or if an air gap is caused by roughness or a thick layer of paint, the holding force will decrease significantly. Additionally, for wall mounting, keep in mind that the shear force (displacement load parallel to the wall) is only about 15% to 20% of the nominal perpendicular holding force due to lower friction.
