What are permanent magnets and which alloy is suitable?
Permanent magnets are magnets that retain their magnetic force over time without requiring an external electric current. Within modern mechanical engineering and industrial design, selecting the proper magnetic material is vital for the reliability and efficiency of any application. Each type of permanent magnet offers unique physical properties regarding holding force, temperature resistance, and corrosion stability.
The Four Main Industrial Magnetic Materials

1. Neodymium magnets (NdFeB - Extreme power)
Neodymium is part of the rare-earth magnet family and stands as the most powerful magnetic material in the world. These magnets deliver massive holding power within compact dimensions, making them excellent for high-tech applications, displays, and general mounting where space is limited. 2. Ferrite magnets (Ceramic - Economical and weather-resistant)
Are you dealing with humid environments, outdoor applications, or working with a tighter budget? Then ceramic ferrite magnets are your smartest choice. Ferrite is naturally completely rust-proof and retains its magnetic properties at operating temperatures up to 200 °C. Although its holding force is lower than neodymium, it remains the most widely used magnetic material worldwide due to its excellent cost-to-performance ratio.
3. Samarium-Cobalt magnets (SmCo - High-tech heat resistance)
Samarium-Cobalt is another rare-earth magnetic alloy. SmCo combines very high magnetic strength with outstanding temperature stability up to an impressive 350 °C. Furthermore, the material contains virtually no free iron, making it highly resistant to corrosion, acids, and industrial chemicals without requiring any coating. This makes them the standard choice within automotive, aerospace, and medical sectors.
4. AlNiCo magnets (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt - Extreme temperatures)
AlNiCo magnets are produced via casting or sintering and are metallic in nature, meaning they are significantly less brittle than ferrite or SmCo. AlNiCo is the undisputed leader in heat resistance, functioning reliably at operating temperatures up to 450 °C. They are frequently utilized in industrial ovens, foundries, and specific sensor systems.
Difference Between Raw Magnets and Pot Magnets
In addition to material selection, the mechanical design is essential. A raw permanent magnet radiates its magnetic field lines in all directions. However, if your primary goal is clamping or assembly, it is highly recommended to select a magnetic system from our pot magnets category. In these systems, the magnet is encased in a steel cup, focusing the entire magnetic field onto a single active holding face.
