Samarium Cobalt magnets
Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnets can be used in a variety of applications. In terms of holding power, these magnets are comparable to Neodymium magnets, but can be used at temperatures up to 350°C (Neodymium only 80°C). This is why SmCo magnets are often used in molds. What are Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) Magnets?
Samarium-Cobalt magnets (also known as SmCo magnets) belong to the rare-earth magnet family, just like neodymium. Although their pure **holding force** at room temperature is slightly lower than that of neodymium magnets, they offer unique physical properties. These characteristics make them indispensable in heavy industry, mechanical engineering, the automotive sector, and aerospace applications. An SmCo pot magnet combines very strong magnetic force with extreme stability under the harshest conditions.
The Unique Advantages of Samarium-Cobalt Pot Magnets
When do you choose Samarium-Cobalt over neodymium or ferrite? SmCo magnets excel in the following specific areas:
Extreme Temperature Resistance: While standard neodymium magnets begin to lose their strength above 80 °C, Samarium-Cobalt magnet systems maintain their stability and magnetism at working temperatures up to an impressive 350 °C. Consequently, they are the standard choice for ovens, foundries, and applications surrounding internal combustion engines. Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: Neodymium magnets contain iron and must always be coated to prevent rust. In contrast, Samarium-Cobalt contains virtually no free iron. This makes the material naturally highly resistant to oxidation, chemicals, and weathering. Even without any coating, SmCo magnet systems continue to perform reliably in humid or aggressive industrial environments.
High Coercivity (Demagnetization Resistance): SmCo magnets are highly resistant to demagnetization from external opposing magnetic fields. This makes them extremely reliable for critical industrial sensors, actuators, and electric motors.
Applications and Mounting Configurations
Due to the steel housing (pot) into which the Samarium-Cobalt magnet is pressed, the magnetic field lines are directed toward the active surface for optimal perpendicular holding force. These systems are frequently used in industrial machinery, high-tech engineering, and mold construction where high operating temperatures occur. Please note: Due to its material composition, Samarium-Cobalt is relatively brittle and prone to chipping upon hard, direct impact (steel-on-steel). We therefore always advise positioning the magnet with care.
